Happy fall! The time has come to enjoy the changing leaves, mums, apples, and pumpkins.
While these are great reason to celebrate, fall is also an ideal time to perform a social media audit, clean up profiles, and determine what should be on your calendar for the months ahead.
Calling attention to the season is a fun way to freshen up your pages and generate new content ideas, so today I’m highlighting 7 simple ways to bring the fall season to life on social media.
Grab a pumpkin spice latte and pull up a chair; it’s time to get inspired!
1. Incorporate user generated content and photos to highlight seasonal items
If fans are taking photos for you and posting them in a natural way, why not use them? (After asking for their permission.) This can be a great way to shake-up content and develop relationships with loyal customers.
Dunkin’ Donuts does a great job with this and always gives the user the credit they deserve.
2. Get seasonal with your cover photo
Think of your cover photo as the wreath on your front door. Changing it up for the season is a simple way to make the user experience more aesthetically pleasing.
This pumpkin-inspired one from Starbucks is fantastic; not only does it celebrate fall, but it also highlights seasonal products.
Sites like Canva and PicMonkey provide low-cost or even free seasonal images and the best news is, they have a tool that sizes them FOR you – easy peasy!
3. Make a TikTok or Instagram Reels video with fall in mind
This can be an intimidating one for small businesses, but it doesn’t need to be! Keep it simple and have fun. Try using our TikTok tips from here, for starters.
Thinking ahead to Halloween, we love how this OB/GYN dressed up and produced a video comparing women in labor to the different houses of Harry Potter. This type of content can be a fun way to show the human side of those taking care of us. (See more tips for how a business can find their voice here.)
4. Create a video highlighting a fall-friendly recipe or craft
It’s no secret – videos are extremely valuable content. Small businesses can create great videos just with a phone and some simple editing tools.
An alternative idea is shown in the example below, which used collaboration with a local influencer. Instead of Michaels Stores making the video, they solicited help, and the video comes across as natural product placement.
5. Pin a popular fall themed post to the top of your pages
Pinning a relevant post is a simple trick for driving direct traffic to a website. This can also be a valuable time-saver to users who may be searching for a specific themed post during a particular time of year. Pinning it to the top of your Facebook or Twitter makes it easier for the user to find the content.
To do this, simply tap the three dots and choose to pin it to the top of the page.
6. Remember all the (silly) holidays
Every day truly is a holiday. In fact, one of our favorite websites to learn about upcoming holidays is NationalToday.com. Check out what’s coming up in the months ahead and plan some great content that can easily be made relevant to your business with thoughtful posts and relevant hashtags.
Thinking beyond the more traditional holidays, here are a few examples of fun “holidays” fall brings:
- September 25: National Cooking Day
- September 29: National Coffee Day
- October 10: World Mental Health Day
- October 28: National Chocolate Day
- November 1: National Author’s Day
- November 13: World Kindness Day
Creating content around these “holidays” when they are relevant to your business isn’t just fun, but they can be a great way to drive up engagement as well.
This Grandparents Day image shared from Sesame Street is a great example of how those off-beat holidays can make for great content.
7. Think beyond traditional social media
Beyond the traditional types of social posts, which include information, photos, and videos, there is also an opportunity to drive website traffic. Your business blog is a great spot to start. What fall topics can be discussed there?
We love how Dairy Queen created a fall-specific landing page with phone backgrounds, and a music playlist. This is such a great way to provide some extra value to fans and customers, and have a little fun in the process! They are driving traffic to this page from their social channels.
Overall, there are plenty of ways to get creative. Enjoy the season ahead and let us know what fantastic fall content you are seeing!
