Fall is a season of many things: Back to school, colorful leaves, renewed school spirit and high school football. But as the seasons change, it is a great time to talk to your teens about safe driving.
Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teenagers in America, with nearly 5,000 teens killed annually, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The good news is, drivers with more skills get into fewer crashes. But how do students obtain these extra skills?
Enter Ford Driving Skills for Life. In case you aren’t familiar, FordDSFL was founded in 2003 by the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts. It is aimed at teaching newly licensed teen drivers the necessary skills for safe driving. This free program is a step beyond what teens learn in standard driver’s education programs.
In the program, teens improve their driving skills in four key areas:
- Hazard recognition
- Vehicle handling
- Speed management
- Space management
Improvement in these areas has been shown to cut the risk of a crash by as much as 60%.
During this year’s WDIV/Local 4’s Friday Football Frenzy season, Ford Driving Skills for Life (a 4Frenzy sponsor) is launching a campaign on Instagram to authentically raise awareness of this important program among teen drivers.
Ford Driving Skills for Life (@FordDSFL on Instagram) is asking teenagers to share school spirit photos on Instagram with the hash tag #drivingschoolspirit. Photos shared under that hash tag or tagged with @FordDSFL will be included in a round-up for special recognition during the Friday Football Frenzy season on WDIV-Local4.
How can you help? Whether you are a parent, teacher or a high school spirited fan yourself, encourage the teenagers in your life to take school spirit photos and share them with the hash tag #drivingschoolspirit and tag @FordDSFL on Instagram.
Share this blog on your Facebook page or Tweet it to followers.
