For today’s “tweens” — young teenagers between the ages of 9 to 13 — learning about reading, writing and arithmetic only covers a portion of what they need to know to become responsible, productive adults. With the ever-growing popularity of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, tweens also need to learn how to become responsible digital citizens. Who is teaching today’s tweens to make smart online decisions?

Schools are now stepping up and finding ways to teach this information. Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, MI acknowledges that digital citizenship training is important for tweens and has partnered with Building Better Families through Action and Hay There Social Media to deliver information on safe social networking to students on April 10 and 11.

The BBFA organization offers a wide range of services related to parenting and prevention, and this includes lessons on safe social media usage. Hay There Social Media has launched, “Saving Face for Parents and Schools,” a training program with online videos and curriculum that helps parents and educators coach tweens to be responsible digital citizens using social media.

“With Saving Face for Parents and Schools, we’re teaching parents, educators and students themselves how to handle issues like cyber bullying, online safety and privacy, and social media responsibility,” said Emily A. Hay, founder of Hay There Social Media and co-creator of Saving Face for Parents and Schools. “It’s refreshing to see schools taking a proactive approach to ensure their students are learning responsible online behavior,” said Sheri Watkins, co-creator of Saving Face for Parents and Schools.

Julie Fisher, Executive Director of BBFA and a teacher herself, ensures students know how to create a positive digital footprint. She said the Saving Face program provides Detroit Country Day School parents with additional tools to help teach their tech-savvy children how to be maintain a respectable online presence.

Parents can buy their online access to Saving Face v.1.0 for Parents of Tweens™ for $47 at www.haytheresocialmedia.com/savingface. For more information on social media safety curriculum for schools, contact us or call (248) 631-9611.
