The Introduction

The Michigan Science Center, formerly the Detroit Science Center, reopened under its new name in late 2012. In March 2013, the Michigan Science Center wanted additional help spreading awareness about the science center just in time for spring break, when more families look for fun activities to do. That’s where the TweetTeam™ was able step in and lend a hand — and deliver results.

What’s the best way for people to find out about great places around town? Through social media! The TweetTeam™ uses social media sites like Twitter to connect to key online influencers, who in turn allow for premium exposure by tweeting and re-tweeting comments using specially-created hashtags. In this case, #VisitMIScience created attention for the science center. We set out to let families know about all the great things the Michigan Science Center has to offer and aimed to increase visitors during spring break.

The Opportunity

During the end of March 2013, the TweetTeam™ was tapped with heading to social media to promote the Michigan Science Center and entice families to visit. With the TweetTeam™ specialized approach, we were able to generate honest excitement about the Michigan Science Center on Twitter with our hand-picked team members who were tweeting real, genuine comments spreading the word and driving traffic.

The unique advantage to using a TweetTeam™ is that our team members were tweeting to a target audience who would actually respond to and be interested in tweets about the science center! Plus, our TweetTeam™ members passed along tons of great info in their tweets: Useful website links, tips on parking and location information, prices and more. They also related to their followers by sending out pictures of themselves enjoying the Michigan Science Center and writing about enticing details about exhibits.

Getting Results

According to a TweetReach report, nearly three-quarters of a million people (714,535, to be exact) were exposed to our #VisitMIScience tweets! And remember, the 56,000+ actual accounts reached with our tweets were part of a targeted audience who would actually be interested in visiting the science center in the near future — so chances are good that many of their followers would also be interested.

What we don’t know yet is how this has impacted the number of repeat customers who will continue to come back to the science center and bring their friends in the future…but we’re betting it will be a good number!
